Awards and Recognitions

Sally Mann has received countless awards for her work as a photographer. Mann has been recognized as one of the most influential and greatest photographers of our time.  In 2001, Time magazine named her “America’s Best Photographer,” praising her combinations of natural and carefully assembled flashes of infant-hood.  Many of her works can be seen in various museums and galleries such as the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Corcoran Gallery of Art (from which she received an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree in 2006.)  Her photos have also been seen on the cover of The NewYork Times Magazine.  There have been two documentaries about her, Blood Ties and What Remains both directed by Steve Cantor.

At VCCA's inaugural 40th anniversary event at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond, board member Alex Nyerges, director of the VMFA and host of the event, presented the premiere Mt. San Angelo award to Sally Mann. A longtime member of the VCCA advisory council, Sally's groundbreaking work has made her one of Virginia's most celebrated contemporary artists. Her exhibition, The Flesh and the Spirit, will be at the VMFA through January 23. (Source)
