The Putney School was founded by Carmelita Hinton in 1935. It is a college-preparatory boarding school for both young men and women. The academy enrolls about 225 students a year. They offer education to day-students which is located in another building located in Brattleboro, Vermont. It is set on top of a hill embodied by five-hundred acres of land.

Putney's primary focus for the students are academics, the arts, physical education, and work programs. To teach the students the value of labor, they make it mandatory that the students work on the dairy farm which is a portion of the campus. In fact, most of the campus' buildings were built by their faculty and students.

The Boston Globe addressed Putney's success by writing: "The school's combination of a New England work ethic and a strong academic program, its pioneering of coeducation and community service and its emphasis on music and the arts have made it a model for other independent schools...Putney remains committed to the total community of work and schooling that goes far beyond the more limited pieces of its tradition adopted by other schools."
