Sally Mann grew up in a household of three children including herself. She was the only daughter of Robert S. Munger, practitioner, and Elizabeth Evans Munger, who was head of Washington and Lee University's bookstore.
She married Larry Mann who works as an attorney. They had three children together: Emmett born in 1979, Jessie born in 1981, and Virginia born in 1985. Emmett, her son, is in the Peace Corps. Her daughter, Jessie, is an artist, photographer, and model while her youngest daughter, Virginia, is in law school.
